 Makiwara

The makiwara is a wooden striking-post used in Okinawan and Japanese martial arts to train striking techniques. The makiwara is not a wooden heavy bag. I cannot emphasize that enough. The makiwara is like a good honing stone. It requires time and repetition. And most importantly it requires skill in operating it. But if you take the time to develop that skill then the results you can achieve are nothing short of astounding.

The only real problem with the makiwara is where and how to mount them. The first makiwara were half buried in practitioners’ yards. Unfortunately, that is problematic if you don’t live on a subtropical island like Okinawa. This makiwara base allows you to attach it to any hard floor, ie: concrete or wood. It also comes with the bolts to attach a makiwara post.

This listing is for the base only. No post is included. The base is made of pine with steel reinforcements. It measures 12” (31cm) long and 10.5” (27cm) tall. It has four pre-drilled holes on each side that can be used with whatever hardware is needed to attach it to your surface.

 In the box:  floor-base

                   Bolts (to attach makiwara post)

One last DISCLAIMER:  Do not use a makiwara without the experience or supervision to keep you safe. If you do injure yourself stop using the makiwara until you are fully healed. If you are under 18 years old do not strike the makiwara with full power.

Please contact me if you have any questions. Makiwara are just a part of a whole line Hojo Undo equipment I make including:  olympic and standard weight sized chi ishi handles, nigiri game(gripping jars), tetsutaba (wire hitter), ishi sashi (stone hand weights), and kongokens (weighted ovals and literally the greatest things ever). There are virtually no suppliers of these items so I'm happy to do my part. For pictures of our entire range check out our Facebook page.
