Makiwara The makiwara is a wooden striking-post used in Okinawan and Japanese martial arts to train striking techniques. The makiwara is not a wooden heavy bag. I cannot emphasize that enough. The makiwara is like a good honing stone. It requires time and repetition. And most importantly it requires skill in operating it. But if you take the time to develop that skill then the results you can achieve are nothing short of astounding. The only real problem with the makiwara is where and how to mount them. The first makiwara were half buried in practitioners’ yards. Unfortunately, that is problematic if you don’t live on a subtropical island like Okinawa. This makiwara comes with a 12” (30cm)base pre-drilled to be attached to any floor, concrete or wood, and stands 52in (1.32m). The board is 48” (1.2m) tall. The striking post is made of 3.5" (9cm) douglas fir or red oak and tapers from 3” (7.6cm) at the base to ¾” (2cm), 1/2' (12.7mm) for oak, at the top. The leather pad is 12” (30.5cm) long, laces up at the back, and includes a rubber insert that offers cushioning but will not break down over time. The base is made of pine. It measures 12” (30cm) long and 8” (20cm) tall. It has two pre-drilled holes on each side that can be used with whatever hardware is needed to attach it to your surface. In the box: 48” (1.2m) douglas fir or red oak striking post 12in leather pad (color may vary) floor-base Optional: (4) 3/8" x 5" concrete wedge anchors (Please note that concrete anchors only work on concrete floors.) One last DISCLAIMER: Do not use a makiwara without the experience or supervision to keep you safe. If you do injure yourself stop using the makiwara until you are fully healed. If you are under 18 years old do not strike the makiwara with full power.
