                    Makiwara
The makiwara is a wooden striking-post used in Okinawan and Japanese martial arts to train striking techniques. The makiwara is not a wooden heavy bag. I cannot emphasize that enough. The makiwara is like a good honing stone. It requires time and repetition. And most importantly it requires skill in operating it. But if you take the time to develop that skill then the results you can achieve are nothing short of astounding.
The first makiwara were designed to be anchored by burying the base in the ground. This makiwara is no different. It comes in two pieces so the base can be securely buried, but the post can be brought inside out of the weather. The board is 48” (1.2m) tall so it can be used as a naha-makiwara for training in low stances like shieko-dachi, or it can be mounted higher for shuri-makiwara training in taller stances.
The striking post is made of 3.5" (9cm) douglas fir or red oak and tapers from 3” (7.6cm) at the base to ¾” (2cm), 1/2" (12.7mm) for oak, at the top. The leather pad is 8” (20cm) long, laces up at the back, and includes a rubber insert that offers cushioning but will not break down over time. The base is made of pine, is 43" (1.1m) long, and 18"(0.45m) wide
In the box: 48” (1.2m) douglas fir or red oak striking post
                   leather pad (color may vary)

One last DISCLAIMER: Do not use a makiwara without the experience or supervision to keep you safe. If you do injure yourself stop using the makiwara until you are fully healed. If you are under 18 years old do not strike the makiwara with full power.
Please contact me if you have any questions. Makiwara are just a part of a whole line Hojo Undo equipment I make including: olympic and standard weight sized chi ishi handles, nigiri game (gripping jars), and kongokens (weighted ovals and literally the greatest things ever). There are virtually no suppliers of these items so I'm happy to do my part. For pictures of our entire range check out our Facebook page.
